Glen Hansard - "Ashes to Ashes"
With David Bowie's passing I decided to revisit some of my old favourites of his. I've always found "Ashes to Ashes" to be among the most beautiful lyrically, so I was pleased to hear Glen Hansard strip it down. The first time I heard this cover I couldn't help but cry. It's a beautiful tribute to a legend.
I'm happy, hope you're happy, too. I've loved all I've needed: love. Sordid details following.
King Krule - "Neptune Estate"
I love music that fuses jazz and hip hop, which you may have caught on to if you've been keeping up with the music picks. King Krule gives off an effortless cool dreamy vibe, where I find it feels forced with most artists. That's probably why he's become so popular.
I hope you feel used and cope the way you do, should conjure up abuse. Select your loss, slip to lose just to get the muse.
Spoek Mathambo - "Control"
I had the realization that I have never featured Spoek Mathambo before, which is a disservice to all because he is simply incredible. I enjoy all of his music but I thought it would be fitting to showcase the first song of his I ever heard. It's an imaginative cover of Joy Division that makes it hard to even recognize. Even though I'm a fan of Joy Division I'll choose this cover any day.
He's clinging to the nearest skirt in sight in fear he's lost control.
Jonah Tolchin - "God Forsaken World"
This has the classic country, horses coming down the dirt path feeling but with a modern twist. It tells a rather dark tale. I can't get enough of his deep smokey voice. It's so fitting for this song and exactly what I like in American folk music.
Honest man come walk with me, tell me how do you live so peacefully. Well he took out a needle and a sack of cocaine and said "these things help me to stay sane."
The Hotelier - "Your Deep Rest"
I wasn't planning on including this song but I have admittedly become obsessed with The Hotelier. I don't listen to much within the "emo" genre anymore but the album "Home, Like Noplace is There" strikes a cord with me. Having lost a life long friend/ex-boyfriend to suicide I can't help but relate. This song scares me but it sounds so similar to my situation that when I first heard it I stopped everything I was doing and played it on repeat until I had memorized every word as if they were my own. It's not going to be in most people's taste, but to not include it when I've been listening to it daily felt wrong.
Your lack of love for your dear self is sapping all of us here out. Trace your roots back to the ground work out the knotholes for yourself.
